Hmm well, I adjusted the lightness and contrast settings. If you mess around with them you should easily get the right effect ;)

Ok, because I have trouble doing the background (I use gimp too and a mouse like you) Do you have any helpful tips by chance? o:

Okay well really you should start with the sky first and work your way from the farthest object in the background to the nearest in the foreground. The trick with backgrounds is detail! Don't blur it out like :iconboribaby: does, I find that it ruins the picture and looks rushed or annoying to the eye. The trick with detail is sveral different colors aswell! Light tends to have a white or yellow or even orange/red hue (depending on the time of day) and shadows are colder so usually black or purple or blue. But remember that is the hue and tone not the actually color of the object! You don't want rainbow mountains! =P
And be cautious with shading, shading does best when introduced gradually not as harsh 'black and white' lines!

You use cell shading, right? Your shading and all aspects of the piece are beautiful! I've been wanting to try a style of shading like cell shading but it's so hard!

Yes I do, thankyou very much! :la:
Hmm really? I've found this style a lot easier and better for time pressure, you just have to learn how to get the effects perfect and to know how the shadows would fall :D
With practice it's easier!

So, since you use the Gimp and a Mouse like me (though I use PS more nowadays...) I have a couple questions:

Do you use the path tool on the lineart?
And how do you get the lines to be so thin-to-thick but flow well? Do you go around and erase the tips in a fade style?
How do you shade? Lasso tool and Burning?

Just curious, because I can't get the hang of making things smooth with my mouse in Gimp. I can do it in Photoshop for some reason though, dunno if the tools are better or what. (Though I often switch between the programs, as Gimp has better brushes)

Okay well:

1. No I don't use any kind of tools on the lineart, I just play around with the contrast and brightness settings to get it clear like that. ;)

2. I guess you just draw it that way, remember I don't go over the sketch in any way so just draw the sketch how you want :D
No I don't erase anything, just maybe small resedue left from the camera.

3.Yes I use the lasso tool and the burn tool ;)

Yes I have trouble drawing manes with the mouse, thats why I don't use the mouse to draw realistic horses! =P

Hope I helped,

HG

Thankyou kindly! :meow:
I guess the first main point is to get the lighting right. I cannot explain this, you just have to look at hundreds of stock photos and try to emulate the effects, like the sunlight and how when it's blocked by something, the thing in front is usually very dark with that lighting outline. (I hope I'm making sense ^^;) And also how that sun 'circle' of light appears around it and lights up with yellow or orange-even red colors.
Also remember that everything gets lighter the further away it is ;)

I guess just keep looking at tons of photos and use them for reference :D

Is there a guide to the 'tweaks' you said you did with gimp? xD not having to re-line all my sketches would be brilliant.

Thankyou, The 'tweaks' I did, doesn't have a guide but basically, I set the contrast higher and fiddled around with the lighting settings till it looked something like that.
Then I erased any dark areas that sometimes appear when using the camera. After this I set the background (white) color to alpha so as the get the lines seperated. ;) :meow:
Hope this helped!
